The rebirth of Israel in 1948 was no accident of politics — it was the unfolding of God’s covenant, the testimony of history, and the recognition of international law. Yet today, Israel is attacked on many fronts: delegitimized in the media, threatened by jihadist ideology, and rejected time and again by its neighbors. The story, however, begins much earlier. From Abraham’s covenant with God, to the prophets’ promises, to Paul’s declaration that “the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable” (Rom. 11:29), the Bible reveals that Israel’s destiny is rooted in God’s eternal plan.
But history also bears witness. The Balfour Declaration (1917), the San Remo Conference (1920), the League of Nations Mandate (1922), and the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) all established Israel’s legitimacy in international law — long before 1948.
The Jewish state is therefore not only biblically promised, but legally recognized. Sadly, Arab leaders have consistently rejected peace, from 1937 through 2008. The conflict has never been about borders — it is about Israel’s right to exist. Radical jihadist groups still cry for Israel’s destruction, but as Christians we must speak truth: Israel’s survival is both a miracle of God and a matter of justice.
